Collection Description

Biographical Note

Samuel Charles Candler (1809-1873) married Martha Bernetta Beall (1819-1897) in 1833. Their eleven children included Atlanta philanthropist and businessman, Asa Griggs Candler (1851-1929), Methodist Bishop Warren Akin Candler (1857-1941), and Florence Julia Candler Harris (1842-1926); their grandchildren included Atlanta philanthropist Charles Howard Candler, horse sportsman, Walter Turner Candler, and businessman Samuel Charles Candler.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of the Candler family from 1875-1974. The papers include correspondence, printed material, an architectural drawing, photographs, scrapbooks, biographies, and genealogies. Correspondence of Candler family members include Milton Asa Candler, Asa Warren Candler, Samuel Charles Candler, and John Slaughter Candler and Florence Candler Harris, Andrew and Florence Candler Sledd, and C.G. Greene. Photograph albums were compiled by Mrs. Samuel Charles Candler, Jr., family scrapbooks of clippings and other printed materials were compiled by Florence Candler Harris, and genealogical files were compiled by Frances G. Candler. Some material is photocopied.
