Collection Description

Historical Note

Founded in 1974, small press Cherry Valley Editions publishes poetry and fiction, with a particular emphasis on writers of the Beat Generation. One of its founders was poet and novelist Charles Plymell, who had long moved amongst the American literary circles of the 1960s and 1970s when he moved with his wife, Pamela Beach Plymell, to Cherry Valley, New York, where they had recently visited Allen Ginsberg’s farm. It was here that the Plymells, along with third partner Josh Norton, launched Cherry Valley Editions. Pamela Beach Plymell brought to the business several years of experience working in the avant-garde publishing trade. The press went on to publish works by many important writers of the 1970s, including Mary Beach, William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Claude Pélieu, and Robert Peters.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the records of Cherry Valley Editions from 1963 to 1987, the bulk of which are correspondence and manuscripts of works published by the press. The correspondence is, for the most part, either to or from Charles and Pamela Beach Plymell and includes a mix of personal and business-related letters, indicative of their friendships with many of the writers with whom they worked including Hugh Fox, Lyn Lifshin, Dick McBride, Claude Pélieu, and Robert Peters. Also included amongst the correspondence is a signed poem addressed to the Plymells from Allen Ginsberg. Writings include manuscripts of poetry, short stories, and novels submitted to Cherry Valley Editions for publication. Related notes and letters often include details of publishing layout and design. Also included in the collection are reviews of Cherry Valley Editions publications, press releases, materials related to the Plymells’ teaching work, and a number of photographs.

Arrangement Note

Arranged by record type.
