Biographical Note

William Bedford Clark, educator and author, was born January 23, 1947 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the son of William B. and Florine Griggs Clark. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma (1969) and went on to get graduate degrees from Louisiana State University (M.A., 1971; Ph.D., 1973). Clark held the National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship in Afro-American Studies at Yale University (1973-1974).

Clark was assistant professor of English at North Carolina Agriculture and Technical State University, Greensboro (1974-1977). He then began as an assistant professor of English at Texas A & M, College Station (1977-1980), moving up to become professor of English. Clark has contributed over forty articles and reviews to such literary magazines and journals as Southern Review, Antioch Review, American Literature, etc. He founded the South Central Review (1984). The major focus of Clark's research has been on Robert Penn Warren's career and writings and American west literature. He authored The American Vision of Robert Penn Warren (Lexington, KY: University Press of Kentucky, 1991), originally entitled "Canaan's Grander Counterfeit: The American Vision of Robert Penn Warren."

Scope and Content Note

The William Bedford Clark, Robert Penn Warren collection consists of correspondence and photocopies of two manuscripts. The correspondence is from Robert Penn Warren to William Bedford Clark (twenty-three letters and notes, 1979, 1981-1982, 1984-1986). These letters discuss Warren's comments on his own writing, Clark's writing, and comments on Clark's application for a fellowship at the Beinecke Library. Also included are two manuscripts of Clark's' book The American Vision of Robert Penn Warren. Manuscript one (typescript photocopy, 175 p.) contains critical comments and notes by Floyd C. Watkins to whom the author had sent a copy of the manuscript for comment. A letter from Watkins to Clark (September 28, 1989) is included. Manuscript two (typescript photocopy, 227 p.) is the version submitted for publication. A letter from Clark to Watkins (January 31, 1990) is also included.
