Subseries 2.2a
Articles and collected essays, 1977-2009
Boxes 88-91

Scope and Content Note

The subseries consists of typescript articles and collected essays by Cleage from 1977-2009 documenting her roles as columnist and freelance writer. These articles were published in several Atlanta publications including the Atlanta Tribune, Atlanta Gazette, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, as well as periodicals such as Essence, Pride, and HealthQuest. The majority of the material consists of typescript drafts submitted to the Atlanta Tribune, a newspaper for which Cleage wrote a column for ten years. Topics primarily relate to Atlanta events, race relations, and Cleage's personal experiences. Collected essays include typescript drafts of Deals With the Devil: And Other Reasons to Riot and Mad at Miles: A Blackwoman's Guide to Truth which focused on combating violence, racism, and sexism against African American women.
