Subseries 5.1
Printed material by Pearl Cleage, 1960-2011
Boxes 126-132 and 155

Scope and Content Note

The subseries consists of printed material written by Pearl Cleage from 1960-2011. The series includes published poetry, plays, excerpts from her novels, and interviews. The bulk of the series is comprised of essays and articles. The articles include a number of the "Stop Making Sense" columns that she wrote for Southline, an Atlanta journal which ceased publication in 1988, and the Atlanta Tribune, most of which concerned local and national current events. Other articles include profiles of noted personalities like Lauryn Hill, Bernice King, and Oprah Winfrey. The subseries also contains issues of Catalyst, a literary journal where Cleage served as editor-in-chief and for which she wrote an introduction for each issue and published some of her own poetry and essays. Of particular note is a reader's copy of her novel, Some Things I Never Thought I'd Do, which contains Cleage's corrections and notes.
