Scope and Content Note

This series contains the papers of Fred Clifton from 1952-1985. The husband of Lucille Clifton, Fred Clifton served as the Executive Vice-President of the East Baltimore Community Corporation and helped found the African-American Studies program at Harvard University. Clifton also published the novel, Darl, in 1973. The collection includes correspondence, personal biographical material and diaries, photographs and contact sheets, printed material, and unpublished writings including poetry, lectures, and unfinished manuscripts.

The series includes information on the 1972 National Black Political Convention in Gary, Indiana, where Fred Clifton served as a delegate. The convention condemned forced integration in public schools, in opposition to the NAACP. It also includes documentation concerning the African-American Studies program at Harvard and its employment of Fred Clifton as a visiting lecturer. The bulk of the collection is made up of drafts from an unpublished novel entitled American Antique Glass.
