Scope and Content Note

The series contains the personal papers of Lucille Clifton, and the family papers of five of her children, Alexia, Channing, Fredrica, Graham, and Sidney Clifton from 1953-2006. Lucille Clifton's personal papers include address books, astrological reports, awards, biographical sketches, calendars, notebooks, funeral programs, and other personal material. Also included in this series are documents related to Clifton's career as a poet, including literary contracts, permissions, and royalty statements. Of particular note in this series are the numerous astrological reports and psychic readings. The family papers of her children include writings, drawings and report cards, most notably a small book of poetry by her eldest daughter, Sidney, written when she was ten years old. The papers of Fred Clifton, Lucille's husband, can be found in Series 10.

Personal papers, including travel itineraries, invoices, and documents related to Clifton's career, can also be found in Born digital materials (Series 11). There are also a small number of documents about Clifton that were created or received by Clifton's children after her death.
