Collection Description

Biographical Note

John Earl Cline, Methodist minister, of Waleska, Georgia attended Emory College in Oxford, Georgia and was a graduate (1917) of the Theology School when Emory established an Atlanta campus. Met Eunice Lovett, daughter of William Duval and Lois W. Lovett of Birmingham, Alabama, while both were attending Reinhardt College (Waleska, Georgia). They married on February 6, 1918. Their children were Edgar Earl Cline (1918-1945), John T. Cline, and Lucy Cline Huie.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of correspondence and transcripts of correspondence of the Cline family from 1867-1915. The correspondence includes letters between John Earl Cline and Eunice Lovett before their marriage (1912-1917) while he was attending Emory College in Oxford, Georgia. During World War II, the letters document the military service of Edgar Earl, who served in the Army, Special Training and John T. Cline, who served in the Army Air Corps, and Lucy who was a librarian at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia.

The collection contains correspondence from other family members and friends including Elizabeth Blalock, writing to family while attending Cox College (College Park, Georgia); Lint Lovett, who describes working in the South Pacific transporting passengers from island to island during World War II; Lucy Lovett Domby and her son Charles, who was serving in France during the war; and Pierce Cline, President of Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The collection also includes transcriptions of the letters from John Earl Cline to Eunice Lovett, the World War II correspondence, stories as told by John Earl Cline regarding his life as a Methodist circuit rider, and Cline family and business letters. Also transcribed are letters of Alfred Calvin Blaylock, Lois Sharpe Cline, Lois Wilson Lovett, and William Duval Lovett.
