Collection Description

Biographical Note

Hal McCluney Davison, physician, educator, and author, was born October 2, 1891, in Woodville, Greene County, Georgia, and died in 1958. He graduated from Mercer University (1911) and Atlanta Medical College (1915) and did postgraduate work in Internal Medicine and in Immunology in New York. Davison's medical specialties became internal medicine and allergy. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Evacuation Hospital No. 17, Siberia (1917-1919), and served with the American Red Cross Foreign Service (1919-1920) in Russia; taught at the Atlanta College of Pharmacy (1914-1915), New York Postgraduate Hospital (1916-1917), and Emory University School of Medicine (1923-1943); and was on the staff of five Atlanta hospitals. He was active in several professional organizations (1935-1957) including the Fulton County Medical Society (president, 1951) and the Medical Association of Georgia (president, 1956-1957).

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of Hal McCluney Davison from 1911-1958. The papers include correspondence, biographical information, photographs, subject files, speeches and other writings, passports, and memorabilia. Materials primarily relate to Davison's career as a physician, including his World War I service and his work for the Red Cross Foreign Service in Siberia, Russia. Other topics covered include his education, Albert Schweitzer, professional and civic organizations, allergy and other medical problems, and the publication of Davison's book, Doctors and Dogs Don't Count (corrected chapters included).
