Scope and Content Note

The series contains the personal papers of William Levi Dawson and the family papers of his first wife Cornella Lampton Dawson, his second wife Cecile N. Dawson, and her mother Della Harris. William L. Dawson's personal papers include grade reports, membership cards, a marriage certificate for his marriage to Cecile N. Dawson, a draft of his will, and a copy of the program from his funeral service. Of particular note is a receipt for the rental of a trombone in 1928, when Dawson played in the Chicago City Orchestra, and an autobiography compiled by Dawson that lists his professional activities, updated almost to his death in 1989. The remainder of the collection contains material collected by Dawson's first and second wives and includes clippings, passports, programs, yearbooks, scrapbooks and other personal material. This series also contains Dawson's diplomas and awards he received during his career, including three honorary doctoral degrees and numerous plaques and trophies.
