Subseries 2.3
Ophelia DeVore Associates records, 1955-2005
Boxes 91-113 and 145; OBV 15; AV 1-15 and 18-20
Scope and Content Note
The subseries consists of records of Ophelia DeVore Associates and its subsidiaries: The Columbus Times, Grace del Marco Models, the ODV Performing Company, Ophelia DeVore Cosmetics, and the Ophelia DeVore School, as well as numerous pageants produced by the company. Records are administrative in nature and primarily include memoranda, meeting agendas and minutes, event planning files, marketing and advertising files, financial records, and reports. General administrative records contain numerous financial records documenting the operation of the company and its various components, as well as files documenting plans for a possible expansion of the organization, milestone anniversary events, and major consulting programs. Records of The Columbus Times document publication of the newspaper in Columbus, Georgia, including contracts, advertising files and financial records, policies and procedures, and planning files for their annual gala, "Head and Shoulders Above the Rest." Grace del Marco Models records mostly contain activity and financial reports. Weekly financial reports include information about model bookings. Notable in this section are contracts between the models and the agency, as well as contract termination letters. There are also records documenting such staff as Carol Gertjegerdes (sometimes abbreviated Gerdes), Rosella Laurence, Gina Burns, and Dee Simmons.
ODV Performing Company records overlap significantly with records for the Ophelia DeVore Alumni Association and document events at which the company performed. Records of Ophelia DeVore Cosmetics are minimal and primarily document sales of the cosmetics line. The Ophelia DeVore School records include course descriptions and materials, records of the Alumni Association, and recordings of classes and staff meetings. Most of the records for the DeVore School in this subseries are filed under Jacqueline Wellington, who was the school's director. These files contain financial records, teacher evaluations, student feedback, and numerous memoranda between Wellington and DeVore-Mitchell, as well as Wellington and other school staff and students. Pageant records primarily document the planning of Miss Achiever and Miss Empire State, the two major pageants operated by Ophelia DeVore Associates. These files include promotional material, judging sheets, and applications from contestants. Finally, the series contains a significant run of recordings of The Ophelia DeVore Show, a cable access television show hosted and produced by DeVore-Mitchell.
Arrangement Note
Arranged by company, then in alphabetical order.
Processing
The structure of this subseries reflects the administrative structure of Ophelia DeVore Associates. Files relating to specific subsidiaries of Ophelia DeVore Associates are arranged together under the heading for that company. Administrative records relating to the management of Ophelia DeVore Associates, programs that touched on multiple subsidiaries, and functions not managed by a specific subsidiary, are arranged under general administrative records. Processing staff retained DeVore-Mitchell's original files when possible, though they were often merely labeled with a company name. In those cases, staff further sorted records by format or function to enhance access. Correspondence in this subseries was originally arranged in folders labeled with the name of a specific company or is addressed to other members of the staff of those companies. Records for the ODV Performing Company are the only exception; due to the small quantity, those records remain entirely in their original order. ODV Performing Company files may include records older than the date range in the title because their relationship to the files as a whole was not clear. Date ranges on ODV Performing Company files more accurately reflect the time the files were created or kept. Guest names and topics of the televsion programs in this series were transcribed from tape labels.
