Collection Description

Biographical Note

Edith Holland (1907-1988) was an African American secretary in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She met her husband George Dickerson (1910-2010) while working in his office at Madison Avenue School where he was principal. The couple married in the mid-1940s.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the family papers of Edith Holland Dickerson and George Dickerson, including correspondence, photographs, financial records, and diaries from circa 1880-2010. The diaries document Edith Holland Dickerson's life as a young woman in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1925 and 1927. The 1925 diary in particular documents Edith's work as secretary to Thomas Montgomery Gregory, African American playwright and educator. Some entries in the diaries are written in Pitman shorthand.

The collection contains letters to Edith Holland Dickerson from Dr. Albert Forsythe, who was one of the first African American pilots to complete a cross-country flight. Forsythe was also involved in training the Tuskegee Airmen during World War Two. The letters document Forsythe's "Pan-American goodwill flight" from New Jersey to the Caribbean in 1934, as well as his time in Tuskegee, Alabama. Additional love letters document the romance between Edith Holland Dickerson and George Dickerson.

There are also papers of George "Buddy" Dickerson (1930-1969), the son of George Dickerson and his first wife. Correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, yearbooks, and other materials document George "Buddy" Dickerson time as a student and track athlete at Atlantic City High School (New Jersey) and Syracuse University (Syracuse, New York). Other materials document his teaching career at Taft High School (Atlantic City, New Jersey). George "Buddy" Dickerson married Diane Graves in 1949, and her papers are also present in the collection. Theses consist primarily of correspondence, but there are also photographs, photograph albums, and personal items such as address books and sketchbooks.

Arrangement Note

Arranged by family member, then by record type.
