Photographs, 1912-1979
Boxes 24-25, BV1, and OP14-15

Scope and Content Note

The photographs in this collection date from 1912-1979 and cover the span of Owen Dodson's life, from his early childhood and junior high school days through his time in the Navy, his work at Howard University, and his literary and theatrical careers. The photographs are organized into Owen Dodson, family, plays, and other. The Owen Dodson section includes photos of Owen Dodson by himself and with others. These photos show Dodson with friends and colleagues in academic and social settings and document his friendships with Gordon Heath, James Hatch, and Camille Billops. Dodson's sister, Edith, is also prominent in the Owen Dodson section, illustrating her significant role in his life and the closeness of their relationship. Family photographs represent Dodson's immediate family. Production photos from plays written and/or directed by Dodson indicate the prominence of certain plays, including Bayou Legend and Hamlet, in his directing career. The other photos are primarily pictures of friends and actors known by Dodson.
