Collection Description
Historical Note
Dry: A Magazine Devoted to the Art of Staying Dry was a punk music fanzine published by art school students in New York City (New York) from 1979-1982. The zine's title was a response to Leonard Koren's California-based magazine, Wet: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing. Dry chronicled the punk music scene in New York, as well as no wave and hardcore music. The zine is a predominantly visual publication, with prominent use of photography and a cut-and-paste style layout. Reviews and reports are brief, written in a deliberately spasmodic manner, and primarily about live shows.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of photographs used in the publication of Dry from 1980-1982. Photographs are mostly of band performances, though there are a few of concert crowds and other individuals in concert venues. The bands documented in the photographs include the B-52s, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Blue Angel (fronted by Cyndi Lauper), the Plasmatics, the Pretenders, and X, among others. A subset of photos appears to document a single concert featuring the reggae bands, Exodus, Isitts, Ital Roots, New Irations, Unity, Uprising, and Wailing Prophits. The only band to be featured in the zine was Unity; the other photos were not published.
