Scope and Content Note

The series consists of the personal and professional correspondence of Alan and Judith Dugan. Primary personal correspondents include Dugan's mother, Mrs. E.A (Mae) Dugan and his wife, Judith Shahn. Letters from 1952-1961 are primarily between Alan Dugan and his wife Judith Shahn while they were living apart-Alan in Massachusetts and Judith in New York.

Letters from 1968-1975 primarily regard his work and include requests for publication of his poems, for poetry readings, or to be a visiting lecturer. Also included are letters from American poets Frank Stanford and Yusef Komunyakaa from 1971-1976. These letters contain comments on unpublished poems and also document their personal lives. Other professional correspondence records the relationship between Dugan and his publishers, Yale University press, from 1961-1969 including permission letters to print and publish as well as letters from Antaeus: The Ecco Press from 1970-1987. Also included are copies of requests for recommendations from his past students to graduate school or employers as well as thank you notes and requests to review and edit their writings.

There are a number of letters of awards as well as congratulatory letters regarding awards, and application letters for programs including the National Book Award for his book Poems in 1962, the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for Poems, awarded by Columbia University in 1962, The Shelley Award in 1982 and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Award in 1985.
