Collection Description

Biographical Note

Charles M. Duren, Union soldier, was born circa 1842, and died March 19, 1869, in Bangor, Maine. He enlisted in the 24th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment (1861), became a lieutenant with the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, and later served as adjutant to military headquarters in New Bern, North Carolina, and in Hilton Head, Morris Island, and Folly Island, South Carolina. Duran was wounded and thrown from his horse, returned home, and was honorably discharged (1865).

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of letters, scrapbook, and an obituary. Letters (1861-1864) are from Duren to his parents in Maine. Scrapbook contains military orders, circulars, countersigns, forms, broadsides, and autographs of Union officers collected by Duren during his service. Other materials include documents and blank forms used at Fort Shaw, South Carolina, by the 54th Massachusetts Regiment Infantry, a regiment of African-American soldiers. The obituary is for Duren.
