Series 1
Personal correspondence, 1922-1973
Boxes 1-20

Scope and Content Note

The bulk of the personal correspondence series (1922-1973), which is arranged chronologically, contains incoming and outgoing correspondence in regard to a wide variety of activities. These activities included his official Emory University responsibilities (as college dean, graduate school dean, president and, finally, chancellor); speaking engagements; leadership positions in the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, and in two local men’s literary groups, The Ten and The Symposium. In addition, the personal correspondence deals with White’s service as a trustee of Clark College and Wesleyan College and as a director of Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company.

Series 1 also includes a number of subject folders maintained by Dr. White. These files include statements of congratulations he received when he became Dean of Emory College in 1923 and President of Emory University in 1942; and letters of sympathy regarding his elder son Lieutenant Goodrich Cook White, Jr., reported missing in action in 1944 and dead in 1945. Other topics include the President’s Commission on Higher Education (1946-1949), congratulations on assuming the Presidency of the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa (1952), and his retirement and the selection of a successor as President of Emory University (1956-1957). Correspondence (1958-1971) and speeches (1945-1958, undated) related to the Ten Club comprise the last group of subject folders. (Some correspondence dealing with the Ten Club, mostly of a routine nature about confirming meetings and similar concerns, is filed throughout the chronological personal series in keeping with the original arrangement of the papers.)
