Collection Description

Biographical Note

Sidney Walter Martin was born in Tifton, Georgia on February 1, 1911. Martin was educated at Furman University (A. B., 1932), the University of Georgia (M. A., 1935), and the University of North Carolina (Ph. D. in History, 1942). Following two years of employment at Furman University (1930-1932) and three years as a high school teacher in Palatka, Florida (1932-1935), Martin joined the faculty of the University of Georgia in 1935. Martin was elected president of Emory University on April 18, 1957, officially assumed his new position on September 1, 1957, and was inaugurated on November 15, 1957. Under Martin’s leadership, Emory experienced steady growth in enrollment, in the size of the full-time teaching faculty, in research grant funds, in property assets, and in endowment and trust income. Martin resigned on April 19, 1962 to accept a position as Vice-Chancellor of the University System of Georgia. Martin was later chosen to be president of Valdosta State College and was inaugurated in that post in 1966.

Scope and Content Note

The S. Walter Martin collection consists of correspondence, reports, speeches, press releases, clippings, photographs, printed material, and items related to his inauguration as president of Emory University. The earliest items are reports and letters which date from the period of the search for a university president to succeed Goodrich C. White (1956-1957). The greatest bulk of material is from the time of Martin’s presidency (1957-1962), while a few clippings (1964-1984) and printed items (1966) date from later years.
