Administrative History

Emory College Dean J. H. Purks convened the Planning Board of the College of Arts and Sciences was convened in 1943. The aim of the Planning Board, which had no legislative power within the University, was long-term planning necessitated by the effects of World War II on University enrollment. Purks tasked the Planning Board with making both curricular and physical recommendations for the University. The committee consisted of at least five subcommittees: Academic Surroundings, Quality of Student Body, Academic Standards, Minimum Content of a Liberal Education, and "Bread and Butter" Considerations. The committee issued its final report in 1944.
