Collection Description

Administrative History

The Office of the President is the highest executive office of Emory University, and has been occupied by twenty men since the founding of Emory College in 1836. Harvey Warren Cox served as President of Emory University during the decades immediately preceding American entry into the Second World War. When he was succeeded by Goodrich C. White in 1942, Emory began devoting both academic and human resources toward the war effort, establishing a Navy V-12 program for officer training. In the immediate aftermath of the war, the Office of the President oversaw unprecedented growth, including the development of graduate programs and the continued administration of the Emory Junior College at Valdosta. Finally, under the Goodrich C. White administration, Emory University began to address questions surrounding the admission of women and African American students.

When White was named Chancellor of the University in 1957, Sidney Walter Martin ascended to the Presidency. His brief administration saw the acquisition of the Lullwater estate, the abolition of compulsory chapel, and continued administrativeengagement with issues of race and race relations at Emory. Martin’s 1962 resignation from the presidency coincided with the integration of Emory University. Sanford S. Atwood was inaugurated President of Emory University in the fall of 1963; his tenure would last fourteen years. Through his representation in numerous regional, national, and international consortia—such as the Southern University Conference and the International Association of University Presidents—Atwood led Emory’s engagement and collaboration with other institutions and began its shift from a regional to a national institution.

Under Atwood, James T. Laney served as Dean of Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. Laney succeeded Atwood as President of the University in 1977, serving until 1993. In 1979, Laney oversaw the acquisition of a $105 million gift from Robert and George Woodruff. At the time, the Woodruff gift was the single largest donation ever made to an American institution of higher education, and much of the rest of Laney’s administration was devoted to administering the growth that these funds fostered. After Laney’s 1993 retirement, William Chace was named president, an office he held until 2003. Chace oversaw the continued expansion of Emory’s physical plant, funded new programs to bolster faculty research, and implemented policies that extended Emory’s commitment to a diverse working and learning environment.

Scope and Content Note

The collection comprises materials from the administrations of six university presidents, spanning much of the twentieth century. Records include administrative reports, meeting minutes, speech transcripts, correspondence from members of the Board of Trustees, Methodist Church-related materials, and records of administrative involvement in regional and national professional organizations. Of particular interest are the Thomas J. J. Altizer materials, which detail public and institutional reactions to the controversial “Death of God” theology promoted by Altizer, a professor in the religion department of Emory College. Several linear feet of material also documents Emory participation in the war effort between 1942 and 1945, including the University’s Navy V-12 programs and selective service materials. Researchers interested in mid-twentieth century race relations will also materials documenting Emory University’s movement toward racial integration and early affirmative action programs. The bulk of the collection is concentrated in the years 1940-1993.
