Collection Description

Administrative History

Theater at Emory originated with the independent formation of the Emory Players performing group in 1928. While the group originally performed at off-campus venues, in 1952 the group's director, George Neeley, moved the Emory Players to the Alumni Memorial building. In 1972, then-director Fergus Currie reorganized and renamed the group Theatre Emory. Currie established a summer theater program and a regular annual schedule. In 1982 Theater Emory again reorganized within the College of Arts and Sciences in conjunction with a theater studies major and other student performing groups.

Scope and Content Note

Theater Emory records consist of subject files that include correspondence, publicity materials, photographs, and clippings relating to plays and performances organized by Theatre Emory. The bulk of the material is from the period after the Emory Players were reestablished as Theatre Emory, and before the group became a part of the College of Arts and Sciences. There is a small amount of material from the Emory Players.

Theater Emory records also contains the captured and preserved website of Theater Emory (http://theater.emory.edu/) available to browse via Archive-It, a subscription service of the Internet Archive.

Arrangement Note

General subject files are first arranged chronologically, followed by the performance files which are grouped by season and arranged alphabetically. Guest artists are noted in parentheses after titles where applicable.
