Abstract:Papers of H. Prentice Miller, Emory University faculty member and administrator, include personal and professional correspondence, newspaper clippings, speeches and writings, printed materials, and other materials, chiefly related to Miller's work as Dean of Alumni and his involvement with the Emory University Alumni Association and with various non-Emory scholarship foundations. Some correspondence is that of Judson C. Ward, also an Emory University faculty member and administrator. The collection also includes correspondence, writings, and other items attributed or related to Samuel Candler Dobbs, notably a letter, 1919, confirming his appointment as president of the Coca-Cola Company.

Collection Description

Biographical note

Henry Prentice Miller was an Emory professor and administrator. Miller was born in Barnesville, Ga. on March 7, 1905 and attended the Gordon Millitary Institute before enrolling at Emory. He received his Ph.B. from Emory in 1927 and his A.M. in English in 1928. Miller was hired as an instructor in English and used his summers to work toward a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, which he received in 1942. Miller was named Assistant to the Dean of Emory College in 1930, Assistant Dean in 1934, Associate Dean of the Lower Division in 1943, Dean of the Lower Division in 1948 and Dean of Undergraduate Instruction in 1958. During this time period, Miller continued teaching as an Assistant or Associate Professor in English. Also in 1958, Miller served as Special Assistant in Development and in 1959 took a year's leave of absence to raise funds under the auspices of the Alumni Loyalty Fund. Miller became the first Emory faculty or staff to head the Emory Alumni Association in 1949 and in 1960 was named Dean of Alumni. Miller retired in 1973 but remained an active volunteer in the Alumni Office, holding the title Dean of Alumni, Emeritus until 1984. Miller died on November 21, 1985.
