Collection Description

Administrative History

George J. Benston was born in New York, N.Y., in 1932. He graduated from Queens College in 1953 and received his MBA from New York University in 1953. Benston enrolled at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago and earned his Ph.D. in 1963. He became a faculty member at the University of Rochester's Graduate School of Management where he remained for 21 years. Benston came to Emory University in 1987. He was the John H. Harland Professor of Finance in the Goizueta Business School and also taught in the Department of Economics, part of Emory College of Arts and Sciences. He passed away in 2008.

Scope and Content Note

The research files of George J. Benston contain materials collected as part of research and studies Benston conducted while a professor at the University of Rochester. The research materials principally involve the economics of discriminatory mortgage lending policies (redlining) in urban areas. Benston and colleagues received a National Science Foundation grant in 1980 to conduct research on the issue. There is also a file of newspaper clippings about Benston.
