Scope and Content Note

Series includes subject files of the Art History Department at Emory University relating to partnerships with other Emory departments and institutions as well as with outside institutions. There are also some administrative materials and materials relating to campus buildings and architectural planning materials.

Materials pertaining to campus buildings include proceedings regarding the building of a center for the fine arts and the expansion of Emory's Museum of Art and Archaeology (later the Michael C. Carlos Museum). The series includes architectural planning materials, covering 1990-1991 planning stages for the establishment of an Emory Arts Center, including correspondence between Emory College and New York-based architect Peter Eisenman. The series also includes materials related to previous efforts in the 1960s and 1970s preceding these negotiations, including the proposed establishment of an interdisciplinary Emory University Arts Center Building or "Fine Arts Center" including reports and proposals by the Committee on the Emory University Fine Arts Center and the Committee on Fine Arts.

Administrative materials in this series include a faculty research directory; materials concerning conversion to the semester system; minutes, memoranda and questionnaires regarding uniform requirements; a proposal for a program of interdisciplinary General Studies; a program for the training of college teachers; correspondence and memoranda related to Deans John Palms and David Minter; and information regarding Emory University honorary degree nominations. Administrative materials also include reports and recommendations for campus enrollment, reports by an external evaluation committee, memoranda on summer classes, the campus directory, an accreditation review, correspondence with the library collections management and sub-committees, book order forms, annual allocations of library funds, and guidelines for purchases of library materials. The series further consists of personnel related files include hiring procedures for the Humanities and Social Science Reference Department of the Woodruff library, 1990-1991 materials and goals the faculty retreat, and proceedings and reports by the College Staff Consortium.

Pedagogical matters are reflected in correspondence with the Education Testing Service (ETS) regarding an Advanced Placement art teacher training institute. Grants awarded to the Art History department include a grant by the Committee for the Humanities in Georgia, as well as a grant by the Ford Foundation for the purpose of planning and organizing a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program are also included as subject files in the series. There are also materials related to Emory's 1977 television station, EMO-T.V., and the 1982-1983 Emory University Human Rights Year with an Art History students' exhibition entitled "With Liberty and Justice for All: Human Rights in America."

The series also includes documents regarding collaboration with other departments and institutions at Emory, as well as the establishment of graduate level courses in Art History through collaboration with the Institute for Liberal Arts (ILA). The series documents the 1977 institutionalization of a Master's Program in Art History, the establishment of a concurrent master of arts in the Art History Department and the Division of Library and Information Management. Also included in the series are exchange agreements with institutions outside of Emory, for instance Georgia State University and the Atlanta College of Art where Emory students took studio art classes. Collaborations with outside institutions featured in the collection include the Atlanta Art Workers Coalition and the College Art Association.
