Collection Description

Administrative History

Emory graduate Billy E. Frye spent his early career as a professor at the University of Virginia and the University of Michigan, the latter of which where he was also the Dean of the College of Literature, Science, and Arts and Vice President for Academic Affairs. He returned to Emory in 1985 to become dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and vice-president for research. Before he retired in 2001, he held a number of administrative positions at Emory, including serving as the University’s first provost, interim president from 1993 to 1994, and chancellor of the University beginning in 1997. In 1998 he wrote a report titled “A Vision for Emory” that laid out a plan for improving and expanding the University.
