Collection Description

Biographical Note

Mark K. Bauman, educator and historian, was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 12, 1946. After earning a bachelor of arts degree at Wilkes College in 1967, he earned master of arts degrees at both Lehigh University in 1968 and the University of Chicago in 1972. Under the supervision of James Harvey Young in 1975, Bauman completed his doctoratal degree in Emory University’s History department with a dissertation on the social thought of Methodist Bishop Warren Akin Candler. Bauman’s manuscript won the Jesse Lee Prize in American Methodist History in 1979, and the subsequent book, Warren Akin Candler: The Conservative as Idealist, was published in 1980 by Scarecrow Press. Dr. Bauman went on to teach history at Atlanta Junior College (now Atlanta Metropolitan College) and to publish on the history of Jews in the American South.

Scope and Content Note

The research materials of Mark K. Bauman include correspondence with publishing houses, archival repositories, professional historians, and various associates and family members of Methodist Bishop Warren Akin Candler. The collection also includes audiocassette recordings and transcriptions of interviews with some of these individuals, as well as research notes and essays prepared in advance of his dissertation. While the majority of research materials are related to the Candler biography, others fall outside this scope, including, for example, drafts of Bauman’s several entries in the Dictionary of Georgia Biography.

Arrangement Note

Arranged alphabetically by subject. Audiocassette tapes in box 3.
