Collection Description

Administrative History

From its founding until 1945, Emory University banned intercollegiate athletics on campus, instead developing an intramural sports program operating under the informal slogan of “athletics for all.” The University loosened its ban in the 1945 “Statement of Policy on Athletics and Physical Education,” which allowed for teams in soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field, and wrestling to compete at the intercollegiate level while continuing to limit intercollegiate play in baseball, basketball, and football. In 1986 the University added intercollegiate basketball, which has since been joined by intercollegiate teams in golf, baseball, softball, and volleyball. The University has maintained its focus on intramural and recreational sports through leagues and classes offered through the Athletics and Recreation Department, which now operates under the Division of Campus Life. The Athletics and Recreation Department was preceded by the Physical Education and Athletics Division.
