Collection Description

Administrative History

While the Emory University School of Medicine dates to 1915, its roots begin in 1854 with the founding of the Atlanta Medical College. In 1898 the Atlanta Medical College joined with the Southern Medical College and changed names to the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1913 the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons merged with the Atlanta School of Medicine and became, again, Atlanta Medical College. Two years later, with the chartering of Emory University and its subsequent move to its Druid Hills, Georgia campus, the Atlanta Medical College was folded into the University and renamed the Emory University School of Medicine. The School of Medicine is a part of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, founded in 1966.
