Collection Description
Biographical Note
Peggy Barlett is the Goodrich C. White Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Emory University (Atlanta, Georgia). Barlett earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology from Grinnell College (Grinnell, Iowa) in 1969 and a Ph.D. from Columbia University (New York, New York) in 1975. Barlett began her full-time teaching career at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesorta, and joined the Emory University staff in 1976. Her research interests include sustainable development, economic anthropology, agricultural systems, gender, and Latin America and the United States. Her fieldwork has emphasized agrarian systems, rural life, and culture change, and she has primarily visited areas in rural Georgia, Costa Rica, and Ecuador. Barlett works closely with Emory University's Office of Sustainability Initiatives as Faculty Liaison.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of the papers of Peggy Barlett from 1976-2015, including teaching and research files, history of the department of Anthropology at Emory University, college and university committee files, correspondence and letters for students, and material document Barlett's professional activities outside of Emory. Also included are a history of sustainability efforts at Emory University, and materials relating to the Piedmont Project, a sustainable food initiative, and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
