Collection Description

Biographical Note

Jane Gaither Eustis was born on August 10, 1920 in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Henry Chotard and Mildred Margaret (Clark) Eustis. She was raised in Washington, D. C., after her father became secretary to U.S. Representative Paul H. Maloney from Louisiana.

She was a 1937 graduate of the Holton-Arms school (Bethesda, Maryland) and attended Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, New York). During World War II, she was an American Red Cross volunteer nurse's aide. After the war, she produced children's programming at WRC-TV (Washington, D. C.). She was a past board president of the District's Hospital for Sick Children, now called the HSC Pediatric Center, and she was also a member of the Phillips Collection board. In the early 1960s, she chaired a Federal Aviation Administration design committee for Washington Dulles International Airport and also worked with William Walton, a painter who chaired the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.

Eustis married George Y. Wheeler II (d. February 1, 2000) in 1943 and had four children: George, Jedediah, Jane, and Elizabeth. After divorcing Wheeler, she married Henry W. Suydam, Jr. (d. 1966) on November 28, 1964. She died on April 15, 2008 in Washington, D. C.

Scope and Content Note
