Scope and Content Note
This series contains the writings and related material of authors and artists such as Chinua Achebe, James Baldwin, Sidney Bechet, Gwendolyn Brooks, Horace Cayton, Ralph Ellison, James Emanuel, Chester Himes, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Ted Joans, William Demby, and Richard Wright. The range of materials collected by Fabre varies for each author and may include letters to and from the Fabres, manuscript or typescript versions of the author's works, galley proofs, brochures, press materials, and personal papers. While most of the individuals represented below are writers, there is also a selection of materials relating to musicians, artists, and performers such as Sidney Bechet, Josephine Baker, Katherine Dunham, John C. Rogers, and Ted Joans. The highlights of this series include the depth of materials relating to Chester Himes, Ted Joans, and Richard Wright, as well as rare pieces pertaining to Josephine Baker, Langston Hughes, and numerous others.
