Series 2
Peddy family papers, 1836-1940, 1979
Boxes 7-9, BV 2, OP 2-6

Scope and Content Note

Included in this series are legal documents of Alexander George Peddy (1803-1878), father of George Washington Peddy and grandfather of George Peddy Cuttino, concerning a case against Peddy and Smith, lawyers. Personal, business and financial papers of George W. Peddy (1834-1913) document his service as a CSA surgeon and as a physician in the Newnan, Georgia area. The correspondence of George W. Peddy and his wife Zerlina Catherine (Kate) Peddy (1838-1927), upon which George P. Cuttino's book, Saddle Bag and Spinning Wheel (Macon, Ga.: Mercer Univ. Press, 1980) is based, recounts their separation during the war years, 1861-1865. Letters to George and Kate from friends and family prior to and during their marriage include those from Charles Nicholas Featherston while at Emory College, 1858-1859 and while serving as a soldier in the Confederate Army, 1861-1863. Letters from George's brother, John Taylor Peddy, 1862, who was with the Seventh Regiment Ga. Volunteers, are also included. War activity in north and south Georgia is discussed in letters exchanged between George and his father-in-law, Lucius H. Featherston. Remaining correspondence concerns family life and social events. The manuscript of Saddle Bag and Spinning Wheel and seven diaries kept by Daisy Peddy, 1933-1940, recounting her life in Newnan, Georgia where she taught music, complete the series.

A general chronological arrangement of earliest to most recent family materials is preceded by genealogical information. All family correspondence is arranged in chronological order with the series of letters exchanged between Kate and George Peddy kept together. A family Bible (BV 2) and 4 diplomas (OP 3) are housed separately.
