Series 4
Photographs, [ca. 1845-1940]
Boxes 18-20, OP 8-9

Scope and Content Note

This collection of photographs of members of the Featherston-Peddy-Wright families and their branches is a fine representation of nineteenth century photography. It includes daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes as well as cartes-des-visites, cabinet cards, and portraits. Most interesting in relation to Series 1-3 are a daguerreotype of Mary Overton Cosby Andrew, mother of Bishop James Osgood Andrew and mother-in-law to John Wright; an ambrotype of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Wright, parents of Henry Wright; an ivorytype of Lucius H. Featherston; a tintype of Mary Emma Featherston at about age eighteen; a family portrait of the Peddys; and photographs of Kathleen Wright and school friends. A carte-de-visite album with photographs, ca. 1860-1880, is an example of a kind many nineteenth-century families owned and enjoyed. Photographers of Atlanta, Eatonton, Newnan, Macon, LaGrange and Madison, Georgia represented in this series are named in the inventory if known, as are several photographers from out-of-state.

The series is arranged by family name and are further divided into groups of family members and family friends. One exception is the final box that contains photographs of Kathleen Wright and friends only, followed by photographs of unidentified persons. Housed separately are a Featherston family portrait (OP 2) and a portrait of John H. Featherston (OP 1).
