Scope and Content Note

The series contains materials by or about Flannery O'Connor that were collected by Fitzgerald in the course of her research on O'Connor. The materials include correspondence, both original and photocopies, between O'Connor and her circle of friends including Caroline Gordon, Betty Hester, Lee Maryat, and Janet McKane. Additional copies of O'Connor correspondence which was sent to Fitzgerald may be found in Series 1, Correspondence - the presence of such correspondence is noted in the container list for that series.

In addition, the series contains some of O'Connor's works, typescripts and published, that either were sent to Fitzgerald directly by O'Connor or collected by Fitzgerald in the course of her research. The O'Connor typescripts include her short stories "The Enduring Chill," "Everything that Rises Must Converge," "A Good Man is Hard to Find," "The King of the Birds," "Parker's Back," "A View of the Woods," and "Judgment Day." A complete typescript of O'Connor's second novel, The Violent Bear It Away (1960) is also included. The remainder of the printed materials consists of published works about O'Connor including articles and essays, book reviews, and newspaper clippings. The series also contains copies of several books owned by Fitzgerald either by or about O'Connor which are heavily annotated by Fitzgerald.
