Biographical Note

Arva Colbert Floyd, missionary, educator, and author, was born November 27, 1898, in Chipley, Georgia, and died June 12,1973, in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his B.D. from Emory University (1924) and his Ph.D. from Yale University (1939). Author Of White Man-Yellow Man, and editor of The Diary Of Young J. Allen, Floyd was a teaching missionary to Japan (1924-1928), and professor of Christian Mission and World Religions at Candler School of Theology, Emory University (1934-1967).

The collection consists of manuscripts, subject files, and an audio tape of Arva C. Floyd from 1924-1970. Materials relate to world religions, Christianity in developing countries, his travels, and to classes taught by Floyd at Emory University. Manuscripts include papers written by some of his students, his thesis (Candler School of Theology, 1924), and some of his articles. The audiotape is of his 1967 retirement dinner.
