Biographical Note

Frances Smith Foster (1945?-), an African American professor of women's and African American literature and culture, taught at Emory from 1994-2009. Her books include 'Til Death or Distance Do Us Part: Love and Marriage in African America (2010), Love and Marriage in Early African America (2007), Witnessing Slavery: The Development of the Ante-Bellum Slave Narrative (1994), and Written By Herself: Literary Production by African American Women, 1746-1892 (1993). She has also edited many works, including Minnie’s Sacrifice, Sowing and Reaping, and Trial and Triumph: Three Rediscovered Novels by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (2000).

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the professional papers of Frances Smith Foster, from 1980 -2009. The papers include her writings, correspondence, subject and research files, and photographs. The bulk of the collection consists of her writings and research files for the two books on love and marriage in the African American community in the 18th and 19th centuries. Much of the correspondence and other subject files relate to her tenure as chair of the Women's Studies department and also the English department at Emory University.
