Equal Rights Amendment campaign files, 1968-1983
Boxes 24-26, OP 15

Scope and Content Note

Martha Gaines was an ardent supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment and worked for its ratification, both on the national and state level. The Equal Rights Amendment campaign files, Series 3, reflect both her involvement and her interest in this controversial subject. Both sides of the issue are represented, although the pro-ERA side is the better represented of the two. Correspondence, printed material, clippings, pamphlets, hand-bills, and broadsides are the major material types found in this series, which are then divided according to their place in the national or state campaigns. Correspondents include Zell Miller, Eliza Paschall, Cathey Steinberg, Herman Talmadge and other national and state political and human rights activist figures voicing their opinions on ERA. Related material can be found in Series 4, Professional and Organizational Scrapbook Material.
