Collection Description

Biographical Note

Bruce Garner (1949-), LGBT and HIV/AIDS activist, was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Janie Mae Glass Garner and Edwin Floyd Garner. He attended Emory University, graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. From 1973 until his retirement in 2008, Garner worked for the Social Security Administration. He was deeply involved in the fight against AIDS in Atlanta, working with numerous groups and committees including AID Atlanta, AIDS Treatment Initiatives (formerly known as Atlanta Buyer's Club), Ryan White HIV Planning Council for Metropolitan Atlanta, State of Georgia Task Force on AIDS and many others. He has also volunteered extensively with All Saints Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, serving on the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta's Commission on AIDS in multiple capacities as well as with Integrity, Inc., the Episcopal Church's outreach ministry to gays and lesbians.

The collection consists of the papers of Bruce Garner from circa 1980-2000 and includes subject files, printed material, and audiovisual material. The collection primarily documents Garner's HIV/AIDS activism, including his work on the State of Georgia Task Force on AIDS.
