Series 1
Correspondence, 1918-2006
Boxes 1-26

Scope and Content Note

The series consists of the correspondence of the Geffen family from 1918-2006. The correspondence includes letters to and from Louis and Anna Geffen and David and Rita Geffen; as well as other family members. The early correspondence includes courtship letters between Louis and Anna Geffen (1934), letters Louis wrote while stationed at Fort McCain, Mississippi and later while serving as lead prosecutor during the Japanese War Crimes Trails in Tokyo, Japan. The correspondence is rich in documenting Jewish family life in Atlanta and Norfolk, Virginia, the experience of being an observant Jewish man in the United States military during and immediately after World War II, conditions on the World War II home front, social connections between Israel and the American Jewish community, and life in Israel for American Jews. Louis Geffen's letters from Japan offer observations about conditions and life of the United States military in post-war Japan. The correspondence demonstrates changing gender roles and shifting understandings of American Judaism.

Correspondence relating to Louis Geffen's involvement in the Jewish War Veterans of the United States may be found in the Series 2: Family papers.
