Scope and Content Note

The series consists of writings of the Geffen family from 1926-2005. The writings include manuscript and typescripts of works written by Anna Geffen, Louis Geffen, David Geffen, and Tobias Geffen; as well as other family members.

Writings by Anna Geffen include play scripts that she wrote primarily for the Shearith Israel Sisterhood; personal poems that she wrote to Louis as well as to other family members, and speeches that she made. Writings by Louis Geffen include drafts of a biography of Tobias Geffen, speeches, and a radio address.

Writings by David Geffen include drafts of numerous historic and religious article;, general sermons as well as special sermons for bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, and other special occasions; book-length works; book reviews; lectures, press releases; and speeches.

Of particular interest is documentation relating to Rabbi Tobias Geffen's responsum which determined that Coca-Cola is kosher including multiple handwritten (in Hebrew) drafts and a galley proof of the same.

The writings also include school papers of the Geffen children from high school to college.
