Collection Description

Biographical Note

Christopher Gilbert was born on August 1, 1949 in Birmingham, Alabama, to Floyd and Rosie (Walker) Gilbert. He grew up in Lansing, Michigan, and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 1972. In 1986, he received a Ph.D. in psychology from Clark University (Worcester, Massachusetts). He published a volume of poetry, Across the Mutual Landscape, in 1984, which won the Walt Whitman Prize. He taught African American literature and psychology courses at Goddard College (Plainfield, Vermont), Clark Atlanta University (Georgia), and Brown University (Providence, Rhode Island). Gilbert died in 2007.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of the papers of Christopher Gilbert from circa 1970-2009, and includes correspondence, personal papers, clippings, fliers, poetry by Gilbert, teaching files, and files relating to Gilbert's graduate study. Correspondence is primarily professional in nature and includes letters from poets and scholars including Rita Dove, Mary Fell, Denise Levertov, and Mark Pawlak. Files documenting Gilbert's graduate education and teaching career include syllabi, assigned readings, research material, and university administrative documents. Poetry by Gilbert contains drafts of several unpublished or self-published works, as well as proofs of his seminal Across the Mutual Landscape. Clippings and fliers document Gilbert's readings and publications, as well as his research interests in psychology and African American literature.
