Series 2
Hanley family papers, 1929-1995
Boxes 107-116 and OP 13-14

Scope and Content Note

The series consists of the personal papers of the Hanley family and their associates from 1929-1995. The personal papers of Jesse Hanley and Doris Hanley compose the bulk of the material. Jesse Hanley's papers include financial records, correspondence, material pertaining to his involvement with the Gate City Lodge and the Georgia Association of Improved Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks of the World, and papers relating his death and estate. Since Hanley often used his personal bank account for business expenses, some of the financial records relate directly to the operation of the funeral home. All of the material from after Jesse Hanley's death in July 1948 was handled by the executrix of his estate, Lula Davidson.

Doris Hanley's papers contain materials relating to her personal finances, her involvement with the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks of the World, planning records from the Big Bethel African American Episcopal Church, her education, and her career as a teacher in Atlanta Public Schools. The financial records are primarily from 1972-1975. Doris Hanley's personal account was also occasionally used for matters relating to the business. The materials relating to her career include teaching manuals that offer educational theory and regulations as well as teaching resources that provide activities for the classroom.

The series also contains papers from other family members and associates. The papers include material relating to Hillman Hanley, Jr.; Hillman Hanley, Sr.; Florence Hanley; and Gladis Hanley. Papers relating to Doris Hanley's mother, Elnora Aiken, and sister, Lillie Mae Gibson, are also included. Close associates, Lula Davidson, who was secretary and treasurer for Hanley's Bell Street Funeral Home, and Gladys Willingham (1923-2009), who co-operated the business with Hillman and Doris Hanley, also have material in the series.
