Scope and Content Note

This series consists of office files, program/project files, and miscellaneous files. The office files are comprised of organizational records, including records pertaining to the separation of the Institute of the Black World from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Center (September 1970); administrative structure; and reorganization (1970-1971). Office files also include general correspondence (1968-1974); memoranda from staff and various committees within the Institute; agendas and minutes of staff and committee meetings; and reports, including annual and interim reports of the Institute; committee and task force reports, and reports on various programs. The subseries also includes financial/legal records and miscellaneous files pertaining to mailing lists, directories, and staff development.

Program/project files include materials on various aspects of the Institute program relating to fundraising; publishing; and seminars, workshops and symposia; as well as proposals for many projects. Also present are materials pertaining to specific projects. Of particular note are the Luthauli Project, 1971-1973 [see also, subject files series] and the Black Agenda Network.

Miscellaneous files are comprised of notes (1968-1973), drafts of letters, and transcriptions of a series of lectures on the Role of the Black Scholar (1971).
