Printed materials about Harris, 1880-1978
Boxes 17-29, OP18; MF 20-25
Scope and Content Note
The series contains biographical, critical and eulogistic writings about Harris, written primarily since his death in 1908; periodical and journal articles; notes and drafts Julia Collier Harris used in writing Life and Letters; book reviews (most written during Harris's lifetime when his books were published); clippings; a thesis about Harris with English and Italian drafts; and tributes paid Harris by both his contemporaries and later observers. This series dates from 1880 to 1978, the earliest items being reviews of Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings and the most recent newsclippings. This series is divided into the sections noted above with journal articles arranged alphabetically according to the author's last name, clippings chronologically, book reviews alphabetically according to the title of the book, and tributes according to form, i.e. papers and public addresses, radio talks, or poems. A final item of this section is an unfinished handwritten draft by Frank L. Stanton, Georgia poet and Constitution editor, entitled "Story of Uncle Remus."
This series contains the only significant amount of correspondence not filed in Series 1. The materials collected by Julia Collier Harris while working on Life and Letters include letters she wrote in the 1910s to former associates of Harris about his life, writings and paternity. This correspondence is in both the folders and the first two notebooks.
