Scope and Content Note

The series contains miscellaneous materials relating to Harris, the Harris family and associates, and the Uncle Remus stories, collected largely since his death. Among the items are a story about Esther LaRose Harris written by son Evelyn, a retirement tribute paid to son Lucien, and articles about J.A. Turner and Lucy Stanton. Stanton was a neighbor who painted miniatures of Harris now owned by the library. Also present are photographs, premiere programs, color illustrations and a sound track of Walt Disney Production's motion picture, Song of the South, which is based on the Uncle Remus stories.

Other materials include pamphlets and brochures about the Wren's Nest, the Uncle Remus Museum at Eatonton, Georgia, and other memorials to the author. Two deeds to the Wren's Nest property, dated 1881 and 1883, are also filed here. (Other materials relating to the Wren's Nest can be found in Series 3 and scattered among the clippings in Series 4.)

Series 5 also contains two plays which Julian Harris adapted from the Uncle Remus tales, cartoon strips and folklore stories with characters and motifs similar to those used by Harris. Advertisements, cards, and stamps decorated with Uncle Remus creatures or pictures of Harris, memorabilia, musical scores, an album of Uncle Remus stories, an author, title, and subject index to Uncle Remus Magazine, and other "Harrisiana" complete the series.

Of particular interest in this series is a Harris family bible, published in Philadelphia in 1834 by McCarty and Davis. The Bible includes a Harris family record that indicates Joel C. Harris was born December 9, 1845 (contrary to the accepted birthdate of December 9, 1848).
