Scope and Content Note

This series consists of subject files relating to Hartsfield's wide and varied interests in the city of Atlanta, primarily from his time as Mayor and Mayor Emeritus (1937-1970). Correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports, programs, and other collected materials make up the series. Prominent topics include operations of the Atlanta City Government, Hartsfield's investigation of fluoridation and his battle against fluoridation of Atlanta's water system, correspondence and programs related to the world premiere of Gone with the Wind in Atlanta, and development of the Hartsfield International Airport. Other subjects include the annexation of Buckhead, school desegregation, Hartsfield's nomination for the Assistant Secretary for Aeronautics in the U.S. Commerce Department, consultation work with the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, and his role in promoting the Atlanta Symphony Guild.
