Collection Description
Biographical Note
Thomas Douglas Harwell, a Methodist minister, and his son, Joseph Pickens Harwell, were residents of the Friendship, Crockett County (now part of Dyer County), Tennessee, area.
Scope and Content Note
The Harwell family papers chronicle three generations of a family from Friendship, Tennessee, from 1835-1932. The collection includes papers of Thomas D. Harwell, a Methodist minister born December 18, 1814 in Giles County, Tennessee. Legal and financial records comprise the majority of Thomas Harwell's documents, as well as a photograph of Thomas and his wife, Anne B. Russell Harwell (1815-1877) and a sword owned by Thomas.
The second generation of Harwells are represented in this collection by Joseph Pickens (J.P.) and Elvira Katherine "Kate" Young Harwell. The papers include a number of published religious tracts from the Methodist Church, as well as sermons, some correspondence, photographs, a few financial documents, and Kate Harwell's hymnal.
The papers of Elizabeth Bessent and Joseph I. and Ashley Harwell document the lastest generation of Harwells to be represented in this collection. They include disparate materials such as a fishing license and a published obituary of Elizabeth Bessent.
The collection contains miscellaneous items for which it is not apparent to what Harwell they belonged, including group photographs, images of unidentified, but possible, family members and a photo album that contains tintypes and cartes de visite.
