Collection Description
Historical Note
The Homer G. Phillips Hospital opened in February 1937 as the successor to the St. Louis City Hospital No. 2 for Colored, which had opened in 1919. Named after its major benefactor, a St. Louis, Missouri-based African American lawyer, it served the black community of St. Louis, Missouri. Until 1954 when it integrated, Homer G. Phillips Hospital was the world’s largest exclusively black municipally operated general hospital. . The hospital was a Class “A” General Hospital approved for internships and residencies by the American Council of Medical Education and the American College of Surgeons. It was one of two institutions in America where African American doctors could go for hospital training.
The Hospital operated a nursing school as part of its mission to train health care professionals. The first graduates of the St. Louis City Hospital Number 2 School of Nursing graduated in 1922. The school's first integrated class was the class of 1955, The School of Nursing graduated its last class in 1968; the hospital closed in 1979.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of records of the Homer G. Phillips Hospital School of Nursing from 1929-1991 as well as some administrative records from the Homer G. Phillips Hospital and materials collected by the nursing school administrators. The School of Nursing records include student work and applications, curriculum planning, accreditation records, and financial records. Much of the collection is general administrative materials including correspondence, receipts, and minutes and agendas of the nursing program meetings. Student materials include transcripts, attendance materials, and coursework. There is also a significant amount of materials regarding the accreditation of the organization.
