Series 4
Printed material and memorabilia, 1932-2016
Boxes 151 - 191, OP2-OP4
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of printed material and memorabilia from circa 1932-2016. It contains booklets, brochures, catalogs, clippings, collectors' items, flyers, magazines, postcards, posters, and programs documenting various award ceremonies, concerts, exhibitions, festivals, galas, and performances. It includes material from several iterations of Geoffrey Holder and Company and Carmen de Lavallade and Company, as well as from their respective solo works, relationships, and honors.
The series contains several programs from Holder's early dance career. Notable Geoffrey Holder and Dancers programs and flyers include An Exciting Presentation of Caribbean Dancers with a performance of Prodigal Prince at the Castle Hill Concert Series (Ipswich, Massachusetts, 1964) and performances of Doogla Suite, To the Divine Horseman, and Bélé Suite at Kaufman Hall (New York, New York, 1956). Performances from The Holder Brothers Ballet Company, which Geoffrey Holder eventually led, include Ballet Congo (1950), Bélé Negre (1952), and Dance Creole Dance (1951).
In addition to dance company and large production material, Holder's solo acts and visual art exhibitions are also well-represented. Holder's solo act tour of colleges and universities includes material from Harrisburg Community College (1972), the University of Dayton (1966-1967), and the University of California, Los Angeles (1966). There are exhibition catalogs, postcards, and programs from Holder's visual art exhibitions (circa 1948-1990s), as well as material from exhibitions of other artists (circa 1951-2009).
Material from Carmen de Lavallade's solo and company work include a wide range of dance and theater performances, such as Carmen de Lavallade and her Theatre of the Dance with Come Sunday and Pas de Deux at Hunter College (New York, New York, 1968) and Carmen de Lavallade and the Capital Ballet Company with performances of A Portrait of Billie at Howard University (Washington, D.C., 1962). Theater productions from Yale Repertory Company (New Haven, Connecticut) and Metropolitan Opera Ballet (New York, New York) include works choreographed by and/or featuring de Lavallade, such as Aida (circa 1953-1958), Lucia di Lammermoor (1992), and The Seven Deadly Sins (circa 1970s). Material from the de Lavallade-Ailey southeast Asia tour (1962) and the dance company Paradigm (circa 1996-2010) are also included.
The series reflects several awards, galas, and benefits in honor of or attended by Holder and de Lavallade, especially the New York Shakespeare Festival (Central Park, circa 1968-1972), Festival of Two Worlds (Spoleto, Italy, 1958), and Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival (Beckett, Massachusetts, circa 1953-1993). De Lavallade and Holder's long relationship with Lucille Lortel and White Barn Theatre (Westport, Connecticut) is also well-represented through clippings, flyers, and programs of performances and events from circa 1953-1998, including the Holder wedding.
A large volume of clippings includes general articles related to colleagues, friends, and family of Holder and de Lavallade and general news. There are also promotional articles related to the couple, highlighting their lifestyle and work. Some of the seemingly unrelated clippings may be related to reference albums Holder compiled throughout his career.
Arrangement Note
Arranged in alphabetical order by title and document type.
Processing Note
Most material by and about Holder and de Lavallade was arranged by title. Articles by or about Holder and de Lavallade within full magazines are arranged by title of the article. Material that does not appear to mention Holder or de Lavallade was arranged by document type. The small amount of administrative material from the de Lavallade-Ailey southeast Asia tour was kept with printed material and reflects its original order.
