Scope and Content Note

The Carmen de Lavallade papers consist of the personal and professional papers of de Lavallade from circa 1931-2018 and include administrative material, scripts and sheet music, and teaching files.

Administrative papers contain agreements and contracts, awards and honors, biographies, exhibition materials, production materials, set renderings, and travels papers from circa 1931-2018. It includes de Lavallade's honorary doctorates from The Julliard School (New York, New York, 2008), Metropolitan College of New York (New York, 2009), and State University of New York (2006), as well as several other certificates of professional achievement. Production materials from works in which de Lavallade performed or choreographed include As I Remember It (2014-2015), The Captive Lark (undated), The Fifth Wheel (2016), and Rusalka (1993).

Teaching files contain drawings, music scores, notes, outlines, reading material, and syllabi from de Lavallade's work in movement technique and choreography. It includes material from de Lavallade's dance technique classes such as "Foundation Work," and "Contemporary Barre" (circa 1960s-2004); "Body Games," a workshop developed with Diane Gallagher (circa 1993-2004); and the repertories of John Butler (circa 2002) and Lester Horton (circa 1953-1961).

Scripts and sheet music contain scripts for television shows, films, theatrical plays and musicals, dances, and ceremonies in which de Lavallade performed or created as well as music scores from her vocal performances from circa 1954-2014.
